About the seminar

CSE 290 is held together with the Design Lab Research Meeting, a forum for researchers in the Design Lab to share and learn from each other’s work.

Each session features research talks or works in progress from the Design Lab and, on occasion, guests from other departments and universities, followed by discussion. The seminar is run by student organizers, with oversight by the faculty advisor.

Format

The seminar is a 1-unit course graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. The workload is intentionally light: attend, listen, ask questions, and engage with the speakers. There are no readings, exams, papers, or required presentations.

After each session, students submit a short written response: one idea or result they found interesting and why, together with a question, suggestion, or piece of feedback for the presenters. Responses are shared with the presenters as feedback, so they are expected to be specific and constructive.

Students are welcome, but not required, to present their own research. Talks run either 20 minutes with 10 minutes of questions, or a full session at 45 plus 15.
